### 3.N: : Numbers & Operations

3.N.1: : Compare and represent whole numbers up to 100,000 with an emphasis on place value and equality.

3.N.1.1: : Read, write, discuss, and represent whole numbers up to 100,000. Representations should include but are not limited to numerals, words, pictures, number lines, and manipulatives (e.g., 350 = 3 hundreds, 5 tens = 35 tens = 3 hundreds, 4 tens, 10 ones).

Modeling Whole Numbers and Decimals (Base-10 Blocks)

Model numbers with base-10 blocks. Drag flats, rods, and individual cubes onto a mat to model a number. Blocks can be exchanged from one area of the mat to the other. Four sets of blocks are available to model a variety of whole numbers and decimals. 5 Minute Preview

Whole Numbers with Base-10 Blocks

Use base-10 blocks to model, add, and subtract whole numbers. Learn about place value using flats (hundreds), rods (tens), and cubes (ones). Group or ungroup blocks as needed to add or subtract. Rounding Whole Numbers (Number Line)

Place points on a number line. Round these values to the nearest ten or hundred. Visualize rounding by showing the number line as a hill or series of hills. These hills cause the points to roll to the nearest valley (nearest multiple of ten or one hundred). 5 Minute Preview

3.N.2.1: : Represent multiplication facts by modeling a variety of approaches (e.g., manipulatives, repeated addition, equal-sized groups, arrays, area models, equal jumps on a number line, skip counting).

Play an addition card game! The goal is to create a sum that is as close as possible to the target sum. Students will deepen their understanding of place value as they get better at playing the game. Balancing Blocks (Volume)

3.D.1.1: : Collect and organize a data set with multiple categories using a frequency table, line plot, pictograph, or bar graph with scaled intervals.

Forest Ecosystem

Observe and manipulate the populations of four creatures (trees, deer, bears, and mushrooms) in a forest. Investigate the feeding relationships (food web) in the forest. Graphing Skills

Create a graph (bar graph, line graph, pie chart, or scatter plot) based on a given data set. Title the graph, label the axes, and choose a scale.
