1: : Life Science: Habitats
1.1: : Habitats and Populations
1.1.6: : compile and display the data collected in the habitat study using tallies, tables, and/or bar graphs
Graphing Skills
Create a graph (bar graph, line graph, pie chart, or scatter plot) based on a given data set. Title the graph, label the axes, and choose a scale. Adjust the graph to fit the data, and then check your accuracy. The Gizmo can also be used to create a data table based on a given graph. 5 Minute Preview
1.5: : Food Chains
1.5.1: : classify organisms according to their role in a food chain and draw a diagram to illustrate the food chain
Prairie Ecosystem
Observe the populations of grass, prairie dogs, ferrets and foxes in a prairie ecosystem. Investigate feeding relationships and determine the food chain. Bar graphs and line graphs show changes in populations over time. 5 Minute Preview
1.5.2: : predict how the removal of a plant or animal population affects the rest of the community
Plants and Snails
Study the production and use of gases by plants and animals. Measure the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in a test tube containing snails and elodea (a type of plant) in both light and dark conditions. Learn about the interdependence of plants and animals. 5 Minute Preview
2: : Physical Science: Light
2.4: : Objects that Absorb, Transmit, and/or Reflect Light
2.4.1: : investigate how light interacts with a variety of objects, in order to determine whether the objects cast shadows, allow light to pass through, and/or reflect light
Penumbra Effect
Observe the partial shadows cast by a rectangular block lit by multiple light sources. The number of light sources ranges from one to five, and individual lights can be turned on or off. The light spacing, block width, and distance from the lights to the block can be varied. Light intensity can be observed on a detector. 5 Minute Preview
2.4.3: : predict changes in the location, shape, and relative size of a shadow when an object is placed in different positions and orientations relative to the light source and screen
2.4.4: : plan a procedure and make observations to determine changes in a shadowâ??s location, shape, and relative size when an object is placed in different positions and orientations relative to a light source and screen
4: : Earth and Space Science: Rocks, Minerals, and Erosion
4.2: : Properties of Rocks and Minerals
4.2.1: : use appropriate tools while making observations and collect information to describe rocks and minerals according to physical properties
Mineral Identification
Observe and measure the properties of a mineral sample, and then use a key to identify the mineral. Students can observe the color, luster, shape, density, hardness, streak, and reaction to acid for each mineral. There are 26 mineral samples to identify. 5 Minute Preview
4.2.2: : record observations of their rocks and minerals in chart form, using notes in point form
Mineral Identification
Observe and measure the properties of a mineral sample, and then use a key to identify the mineral. Students can observe the color, luster, shape, density, hardness, streak, and reaction to acid for each mineral. There are 26 mineral samples to identify. 5 Minute Preview
4.2.4: : classify their rocks and minerals according to several properties and create a chart or diagram that shows the method of classification
Mineral Identification
Observe and measure the properties of a mineral sample, and then use a key to identify the mineral. Students can observe the color, luster, shape, density, hardness, streak, and reaction to acid for each mineral. There are 26 mineral samples to identify. 5 Minute Preview

About STEM Cases
Students assume the role of a scientist trying to solve a real world problem. They use scientific practices to collect and analyze data, and form and test a hypothesis as they solve the problems.
Each STEM Case uses realtime reporting to show live student results.
Introduction to the Heatmap
STEM Cases take between 30-90 minutes for students to complete, depending on the case.
Student progress is automatically saved so that STEM Cases can be completed over multiple sessions.
Multiple grade-appropriate versions, or levels, exist for each STEM Case.
Each STEM Case level has an associated Handbook. These are interactive guides that focus on the science concepts underlying the case.
