Alberta Curriculum and Program of Studies | Adopted: 2023
2: Energy: Understandings of the physical world are deepened by investigating matter and energy.
2.1: How can forces affect objects from a distance?
2.1.1: Students investigate how forces can act on objects without contact.
3: Earth Systems: Understandings of the living world, Earth, and space are deepened by investigating natural systems and their interactions.
3.1.1.D.SP.1: Explain how changes in one system can have impacts on other systems.
Pond Ecosystem
Measure the temperature and oxygen content of a pond over the course of a day. Then go fishing to see what types of fish live in the pond. Many different ponds can be investigated to determine the influence of time, temperature, and farms on oxygen levels. 5 Minute Preview
Carbon Cycle
Follow the path of a carbon atom through the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere. Manipulate a simplified model to see how human activities and other factors affect the amount of atmospheric carbon today and in the future. 5 Minute Preview
3.1: How does Earth sustain life?
3.1.1: Students investigate the systems of Earth and reflect on how their interconnections sustain life.
3.1.1.D.SP.1: Explain how changes in one system can have impacts on other systems.

4: Living Systems: Understandings of the living world, Earth, and space are deepened by investigating natural systems and their interactions.
4.1: In what ways do the structures of organisms support survival?
4.1.1: Students analyze organisms and relate external structures to functions.
5: Space: Understandings of the living world, Earth, and space are deepened by investigating natural systems and their interactions.
5.1: How do objects in space impact daily life?
5.1.1: Students investigate and describe objects in space in connection to daily life.
6: Computer Science: Problem-solving and scientific inquiry are developed through the knowledgeable application of creativity, design, and computational thinking.
6.1: How can design meet needs?
6.1.1: Students examine and apply design processes to meet needs.
7: Scientific Methods: Investigation of the physical world is enhanced through the use of scientific methods that attempt to remove human biases and increase objectivity.
7.1: How can evidence advance knowledge in science?
7.1.1: Students investigate evidence and reflect on its role in science.

About STEM Cases
Students assume the role of a scientist trying to solve a real world problem. They use scientific practices to collect and analyze data, and form and test a hypothesis as they solve the problems.
Each STEM Case uses realtime reporting to show live student results.
Introduction to the Heatmap
STEM Cases take between 30-90 minutes for students to complete, depending on the case.
Student progress is automatically saved so that STEM Cases can be completed over multiple sessions.
Multiple grade-appropriate versions, or levels, exist for each STEM Case.
Each STEM Case level has an associated Handbook. These are interactive guides that focus on the science concepts underlying the case.
